San Francisco - GRAMMY U: Behind The Scenes With Dave Smith Instruments

On April 17, 2012 GRAMMY U members gathered at Dave Smith Instruments in San Francisco for a GRAMMYU: Behind the Scenes with Dave Smith Instruments event. Meeting at his workshop, members were treated to a tour of the facility and Q&A session.
After a demonstration of his TEMPEST model, Smith sat among the many synthesizers he’s designed over the years. Smith talked to students about the progression of microprocessor-based musical instruments and the evolution of the programmable synth.
He went on to explain his role in the creation of the MIDI specification and shared his thoughts on being the first to start making software synths saying, “The first to stop making them.” Finally Smith touched on business giving his philosophy on how the manufacturing community interacts and how he runs his business.
Upon the closing of the Q&A session the students and Smith gathered for a picture. This was followed by a reception with Smith and his staff. During this time students took time to sample every synthesizer. Students walked away with great insight on MIDI and its impact. A big thank you to Dave Smith and his team for making this event possible.
