PNW: GRAMMY U Meet The Producer Highlights
Over 40 college students, music enthusiasts, and GRAMMY U® members attended Meet The Producer this week. Local Seattle music producers Geoff Ott, Mell Dettmer, and Martin Feveyear shared insightful information on their experience producing music. Geoff Ottis currently working as an independent producer, engineer and studio co owner of London Bridge Studio. He attributed his break into the music industry to perseverance and a bit of luck. Mell Dettmer has made a name for herself with a knack for dark, doom-tinged recordings by working with Sunn O))) and Boris on their critically acclaimed opus Altar. Dettmer shared that during her time at The Art Institute of Seattle she would work with a group of other students on a session so that they would be able to block out 12 hours of studio time between them. This allowed the group to spend the time needed to create a rich sound. Martin Feveyear is a British born producer, mixer and engineer with over 25 experiences in the recording industry, the last 19 of which have been spent in Seattle.Feveyear discussed his strategies for working with different types of artists. There is a distinct difference between an artist being difficult to work with because of their ego and being difficult because that is their way of getting things done. All panelists agreed that music production is about not only music, but the psychology of working with different personality types. Jovino Santos Neto did an excellent job of moderating the panel. Many students stuck around to meet and converse with the panelists afterward.
