On April 19, 2012 GRAMMY U students gathered at the historical Fox Theater in Oakland for a GRAMMYU: Up Close & Personal event with Childish Gambino. Waiting patiently outside the venue to see the rapper and actor (NBC’s “Community”) members entered the venue and enjoyed an hour long sound check.
Following the Childish Gambino sound check, students gathered into the VIP lounge where they had the opportunity to meet the artist, his band and publicist where they participate in a Q&A session.
Following an impromptu freestyle battle from students, introductions were made and students briefly learned the history of Childish Gambino career-from a struggling artist to getting his break on NBC’s community. Throughout the duration of the Q&A, students learned about life on the road, the importance of being prepared, and the benefits of stepping out the box. Gambino also spoke on his many endeavors and how they led to the completion of his critically acclaimed mix tape CAMP.
In addition to meeting Childish Gambino, students took the opportunity to meet his team on tour where they talked to students about their big breaks and the audacity of going after your desires.
Upon the closing of the Q&A session, members posed with Childish Gambino for a group picture and said their goodbyes. Students walked away with an unforgettable experience and advice that they can apply to their own music careers. A big thank you to Childish Gambino and his team for making this event possible.
